PARK CAFE ASSISTANT

The Thorncliffe Park Women’s Committee is a grassroots organization dedicated since 2008 to creating healthy and vibrant communities by implementing public space enhancement projects and empowering women by providing opportunities of engagement and integration  through capacity-building, education, entrepreneurship and civic participation in Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood. Projects have included the rejuvenation of the local RV Burgess Park , North America’s first ever outdoor Tandoor Oven , running the Friday Night Community Market, Youth Ravine Stewardship Program, the Community Gardens, and most recently, pivoting during the pandemic to create the Neighbours in Need program delivering hot culturally appropriate meals made at the Park Cafe.

DESCRIPTION

RATE OF PAY: $15/hr (35 hours a week for 8 weeks)

PRIMARY FUNCTION

 The Park Cafe Assistant will be responsible for assisting the organization and its social enterprise the Park Cafe. This includes, but is not limited to:

General

  • Promptly arrives/departs shifts and utilizes the clock in/out program

  • Maintain order in the cafe by utilizing daily/weekly/monthly checklists

  • Perform opening and closing duties

  • Must be available to work flexible hours

  • Offer excellent customer service

Leadership

  • Suggest ways to optimize menu based on additions and removal of products keeping in mind price/availability/popularity

  • Ability to work as a team 

  • Maintain a professional image and adheres to dress code

  • Perform daily opening and closing of the POS and counting of till

  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings and reporting requirements

Health and Safety

  • Maintain the cleanliness of the cafe to meet or exceed Health Department standards for  cleanliness, food handling and sanitation

  • Responsible for completing and delegating cleaning and general maintenance of the facility and equipment (clean equipment and utensils, removes trash, fill the water cans, empty the grey water, sweep and mop work area, dust and clean)

  • Record daily, weekly, monthly cleaning tasks

  • Record daily temperatures for health standards

  • Report employee accidents and potential safety hazards to the Café Chef ; completes appropriate paperwork, and recommends a proper course of action

  • Informs the Café Director of any operational inconsistencies, employee incidents,  accidents, potential safety hazards, or any unusual or pertinent events.

  • Responds to any and all emergencies while on shift by directing or performing steps necessary to ensure medical treatment and/or escape routes are available.

  • Ensures that all items meet or exceed food safety standards

Inventory and Meal Preparation

  • Adhere to portion sizing and presentation to provide consistency and quality

  • Assist in preparing and packaging food for the meal program to support the community members in need

  • Help the Chef in preparing all menu items using standard facility equipment ensuring quality and efficiency and customer satisfaction following the recipe binder

  • Assume responsibility for quality of products prepared and served

  • Monitor stocks of ingredients and food items, paper products and assists with the preparation of inventory supply orders on a weekly basis

  • Performs weekly or bi-weekly grocery shopping tasks

  • Receive delivered food stocks and supplies, verifying receipt of ordered items.

  • Store, rotate, label, and date all products properly (follows FIFO).

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Enthusiasm for social enterprises and women’s empowerment.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in working in a café preferred but not required

  • Experience working in diverse, multicultural communities.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently

  • Ability to read/write English

  • Basic computer skills (emails, G Suite products, Microsoft Word and Spreadsheet), willingness to learn POS and inventory tracking if not already acquired skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with people of different ages, genders, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and individuals who experience marginalization

  • Ability think quickly to creatively problem solve

  • Reliable self-starter, with excellent ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, follow through, and meet deadlines

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, and the successful applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment

  • be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

  • Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year

  • be a student in a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program

  • be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
